While same sex marriage is still not recognized in Australia, the Federal Government has recently made changes that mean that same sex couples,, defacto het couple and married couples are treated the same under government legislation (of course there's also legislation determined by the States covering many areas which is separate).
This is significant and has resulted in changes to 85 pieces of legislation that cover everything from welfare benefits to immigration. Anyway the sort of adorable thing is that the the government is publicizing this by the Wear It With Pride
campaign, where artists have designed t-shirts to "celebrate" the legislation.
On the one hand this is so LOLtastic and the sort of thing that obviously was hatched between some drunk bureaucrats and an ad agency. I mean t-shirts for legislative change? This is why we have the word daggy in my country.
But on the other hand, well it sort of feels good that the Government not only made these changes but puts money into promoting them, which has the benefit too of promoting visibility and acceptance of same sex relationships.Their story here
This is from the campaign, and its a striking image in light of the on-going protests against the US "don't ask, don't tell" policy have been in the media this week. It's been nearly 20 years since the 'no poofter' rule was dropped in the Australian military and these new legislative changes give same-sex couples all the same rights regarding military benefits as married ones. Plus a t-shirt.
