Writer's Block: News development

What's the first major news event that you remember hearing about as a child? Where did you learn about it? How did it impact your world view?

it was 1967 and I was four and a half. The Australian Prime Minister Harold Holt had gone for a swim at a surf beach and disappeared. I remember sitting with my Nana listening to the radio waiting for news. There was none. No body was found, and there was little official investigation. The main rumours were that he'd either been picked up by the Chinese in a submarine, abducted by aliens or committed suicide.

In a demonstration of a supreme lack of understanding of the word irony, a swimming pool complex in the city was named after him.

It was my first direct experience of the fact that in life, sometimes shit happens and it has no explanation, no closure and no bigger meaning.
