myboys

lazytown recipe

It's the start of autumn and so a great excuse for me to return to cooking on of my favourite things in the world - lamb shanks. Last night I made a tagine like dish based on a Sudanese recipe and it was delish. you need one shank per person - i don't get mine frenched coz more bone - more marrow to suck out!

Lazy lamb shanks aka Sag Al Dan
2 shanks
1 cup brown lentils
couple of handfuls (500g) okra
1 chopped onion
2 chopped cloves garlic
1 tin tomatoes
handful of sultanas or chopped dates
couple of tablespoons of spices

I love bashing my own spices in my mortar but feel free to use a prepared moroccan or african spice mix (like Berber). I use cumin, coriander, sumac, nutmeg, cinnamon, star anise, salt and some tumeric (fresh is brilliant if you can get it)

Fan Tales

Want to read your fanfic LIVE? Get APPLAUSE? It's even better than comments!

For many years I've been involved in organizing and performing in spoken word events where people read short stories or extracts from their books or epic poetry. As part of the Midsumma festival in Melbourne this year, I organized "Creatures Of The Night" which was a great success.

For the Melbourne Fringe Festival this year, I want to do an event of fan fiction readings - "Fan Tales".

The aim of the evening is to provide a chance for fans who love fanfic to come together, have a few drinks, and listen to some great writing.

I need to register the event for the Festival program in May, so before I pony up the $220 registration fee, I want to know that there are people who are interested in reading at the event.

I am looking for 4-5 writers to read a story, or extract of a story, of 1000 words or less. Any fandom, any rating. Writers will get 5 minutes to introduce their fandom, and provide any story context. You can write a new story, or use an existing one.

At this point I am looking for expressions of interest. The Festival is on from 22 September to 10 October. I haven't picked a date yet but it will prob be a Wed or Thurs night or maybe Sun late afternoon. The venue will be Hares and Hyenas bookstore in Fitzroy, which has a good performance space and will seat up to 70. Tickets will be $15/$10. Any money from the door left after paying registration, venue and PA hiring will divided amongst the readers.

So if you want to be part of this event - which could become a regular fan gathering if it works - please drop me a comment or email. And I'd love it if you'd pimp it to any other Melbourne fanfic writers.

I'd also love to hear of anyone whose been to a similar event, and what it was like.

ETA: Of course this in not restricted to local fans - as long as you can make your way to Melbourne you can play too!
