Canonically queer

gay
I thought seeing it's Pride month in the northern climes, I'd do a happy and gay Supernatural post. Now it's hardly a rainbow parade out on Route 66, but there a have been some notable and wonderful queer characters throughout the show.

Of course there's a lot more to say about sexuality and gender on the show. Gender boundaries are blurred as both angels and demons have switched the gender of the vessel – Meg, Raphael and even Cas. Then there's the siren from Sex and Violence, who feeds on love, changing its own gender form to get who, and what, it wants.

We have a dark side of sex that’s all about power, control and torture rather than desire: Meg with Jo, Azazel and Alistair with Dean and Lucifer with Sam, but that’s a meta for another day.

I must also mention of course, that slash makes it into canon, with even a piece of Wincest fic being read by Becky in "Sympathy for the Devil."

The brothers huddled together in the dark as the sound of the rain drumming on the roof eased their fears of pursuit. Despite the cold outside and the demons who, even now, must be approaching, the warmth of their embrace comforted them.

And then Sam caressed Dean's clavicle.

"This is wrong," said Dean.

"Then I don't want to be right," replied Sam, in a husky voice.

Lily in All Hell Breaks Loose: Part One
lily

Lily is one of the Special Children that the Yellow-Eyed demon had all those plans for (I think he left them on the photo-copier). She finds herself in miserable and damp Cold Oak, along with Ava, Andy, Jake and Sam. I wonder if Andy was able to beam her some girl porn to cheer her up?

Unfortunately Lily's superpower isn't that cool – she can kill with a touch and "accidentally" (so she says) killed her girlfriend. Then Lily makes the most common mistake – she ignores the advice of Sam Motherfucking Winchester and ends up as a demon wind chime.

Alan J. Corbett in Ghostfacers
corbett

Oh Corbett – our sweet gay Ghostfacer who taught us how gay love can pierce through the veil of death and save the day.

In the brilliant episode, we meet the Ghostfacers team: Harry, Ed, his (adopted) sister Maggie, Spruce and intern Corbett, who has a crush on Ed and his manly beard.

In typical Edlund style, it’s all fun and games until things turn dark. Corbett and then Sam are captured by the ghost of serial killer Freeman Daggett and Sam must watch in horror as Corbett is murdered.

He returns as a death echo, someone trapped as a ghost in the moment of their death, who can only be snapped out of it by someone with whom they have an emotional connection.

At the urging of Harry to “Go be gay for that poor dead intern”, Ed overcomes his fear to tell Corbett how much he meant to the team, and that Ed loved him. It's a moment of true pathos.

It works, and Corbett is released and then becomes our dead gay hero as he saves Dean and Sam by attacking and destroying Daggett.

The episode was nominated for a GLAAD awardd for an outstanding individual episode in a series without a regular LGBT character in 2009.

The Chief in Criss Angel Is A Douchebag
chief

Old magicians Vernon and Charlie send Dean on a wild goose hunt for information which takes him instead to the dungeon of The Chief. Having recently returned from forty years of hellish torture, I suspect Dean was in the market for something a bit more vanilla.

And now we’ll never know his safe word.

Demian and Barnes in The Real Ghostbusters
demienandbarnes

When Becky entices Sam and Dean to a Supernatural Convention, they meet fanboys Demian and Barnes – who just happen to be roleplaying Sam and Dean! Their re-enacting of Sam and Dean conversations in front of the boys is hilarious – although not to Dean.

While there are laughs at how seriously Demain and Barnes take their fandom, it’s their fannishness that leads them to be heroes. And in a nice subverting of the "fanboys aren't successful with girls", we find out they are in fact lovers.

In the end Demians, insights into what make Sam and Dean's life meaningful, making an impression on Dean.
In real life, he sells stereo equipment. I fix copiers. Our lives suck. But Sam and Dean. To wake up every morning and save the world. To have a brother who would die for you. Well, who wouldn't want that?

The irony is that fandom has given Demian and Barnes lives meaning and a relationship, the very things for which Sam and Dean struggle. Sorry Winchesters, burned by the poof fanboys!

The episode was nominated for a GLAAD awardd for an outstanding individual episode in a series without a regular LGBT character in 2010.

It had the added deliciousness that the characters were named after the mods of the Supernatural forums at Television Without Pity.

Charlie Bradbury in The Girl with the Dungeons and Dragons Tattoo.
charlie

How could I not love the sassy, red headed geeky, hacker dyke Charlie? And why is she not my girlfriend?

Charlie provided a great perspective on the boys, and allowed us the absolute delight of watch Dean coach Charlie through how to flirt with a guy.

What I particularly loved was just as Charlies geekiness was displayed through her bobbleheaded Hermoine and her Arwen screen saver, her lesboness was also evident in her taste in music (La Roux and Robyn), a grocery list that could've been written by Alison Bedchel: veggies, granola, cereal, arugula, yoghurt and pop tarts, her slave girl Leia tattoo and her ability to hook up at a reproductive rights fundraiser.

The phrase "Peace Out Bitches" is also commonly used as a secret greeting within certain Sapphic sub-cultures.

Crowley
crowley

Ah Crowley. Snarky, yet charming, well-dressed, villainous and obsessed with the length of his dick – a queer demon if ever there was one.

Becky, having momentarily losing her slash goggles, speculated that Crowley may have been Lilith's lover, but he definitely exhibits a preference for men. He seals a deal with a male banker with a kiss and teases him about his homophobia. He also seals his deal with Bobby with a kiss, and keeps a memento of the his smooch on his iPhone (and I am pretty sure he posted it to Grindr).

In order to set Brady up as a traitor with the other demons, Crowley uses the line that he and Brady are "lovers in league against Satan" something he expects other demons to believe.

Crowley also is also a violent sadist, but hey everyone has their faults.

When Crowley says to Cas "have you forgotten that you’re the bottom in this relationship?", it is the first time the top/bottom dynamic has been mentioned in a genre TV show since the classic series episode "The Leathermen of Triskelion" in 1968.

So that's it for now. Let me know if I missed anyone. And stay tuned for my next meta "Is Dean on the down low or just gay, gay, gay, gay, gay?"

ETA: Honorable mentions to:
* Marshall hall, the gay teacher who dies in place of Dean in Faith
* Sue (Maggie's friend) from Shut Up, Dr Phil
* Guy the sassy gay demon friend, from Season Seven, Time For A Wedding!

"It's Time For A Wedding": isn't the demon in that gay as well? Or was he just pretending to hang out in the gay erotica section to snag Becky?

(And yay you for compiling these!)

I sure got that vibe, but maybe I'm stereotyping too much because his "cover" was as a wedding planner, lol.

This is brilliant! I surely didn't realize this:

When Crowley says to Cas "have you forgotten that you’re the bottom in this relationship?", it is the first time the top/bottom dynamic has been mentioned in a genre TV show since the classic series episode "The Leathermen of Triskelion" in 1968.

Nice!

Although I had some problems with The Real Ghostbusters, I really love this:

And in a nice subverting of the "fanboys aren't successful with girls", we find out they are in fact lovers.

-and-

It had the added deliciousness that the characters were named after the mods of the Supernatural forums at Television Without Pity.

And of course Charlie was an absolute delight, start to finish.

Thanks for this.

I also love the subtle nod to Wincest in that Demian and Barnes, who are lovers, are roleplaying Sam and Dean. Who are also....oh wait, that's not canon, is it? It's hard to tell sometimes, which is one of the reasons I adore this show :)

Speaking of which, what about their protestations upon discovery of online Wincest?

Didn't we also get a screen shot of some of that slashfic?

I'll add Sue as a possible maybe! And yes I think Jeffrey and his demon fit in the category I mentioned with Azazel etc - more of that general dakr sex power thing that is sort of adjacent to same sex desire I think.

When Crowley says to Cas "have you forgotten that you’re the bottom in this relationship?", it is the first time the top/bottom dynamic has been mentioned in a genre TV show since the classic series episode "The Leathermen of Triskelion" in 1968.

How do you even know that. Brilliant.

Awesome post! What a great list.

Was it just me, or did it seem like ghost!Victoria was flirting a bit with Annie the hunter in "Grave Importance?"

And, of course, they had an episode called "Slash Fiction" lol.
26th-Jun-2012 11:16 pm (UTC)
I'll have to go back and watch Victoria and Annie ...

This post is amazing! Thank you for this. I did notice that you missed one person though.

Dean Motherfucking Winchester.

It has been hinted at on numerous occasions that Dean most likely swings both ways. The most blatant hint they dropped was his totally unabashed fanboy crush on Dr. Sexy where he claimed that it was the fact he wore cowboy boots rather than tennis shoes that made him sexy. Then there was the Siren that you mentioned. He appeared as a woman to every other victim of his and yet he appeared as a man for Dean with the promise of them being together ~forever. Plus, let us not forget, Dean Winchester sat through Dirty Dancing because "Swayze always gets a pass."

So yeah, if there is one thing I am 100% sure of on this show, it is that Dean Winchester is bisexual.

And now I will leave you with this.

LOL - love that gif! However don't think Dean's fannish crush on Dr Sexy is evidence of anything - I mean I'm a dyke who crushes on Dean and Sam (and Jared and Jensen!)

I thought the cute young cop in "Wishful Thinking" was flattered by the attention he was getting from drunk Dean. Maybe he was gay?
27th-Jun-2012 01:21 am (UTC)
And Dean looked flirty right back at that young cop.
27th-Jun-2012 03:16 am (UTC)
I always thought Ruby was supposed to be bisexual, just because she's really into Tammi the witch in 3.09 and it's played like they were having an affair at one point. I also think Dean's bisexual but that's far more conjecture shhh Also, Jeffrey and his demon in 7.15.

Good stuff!
